When to Enroll in a Florida Blue Medicare Advantage Plan

Most of you will only get one chance every year to join a Medicare Advantage plan. There are some exceptions for new Medicare recipients and special circumstances. In any case, your chances to replace your policy are somewhat limited.

You should keep that in mind when you do a comparison to make sure that you will be happy with what the policy will cover if you’d rather have an HMO or PPO plan, and extra benefits that might help you save money or offer you convenience. After you do your comparison, you will make a policy choice that you will probably have to live with for the next 12 months.

The list below should help you understand more about your enrollment periods:

  • Initial Election Period: This is often called the IEP, and it’s the period you get to choose Medicare Advantage, Medigap or a drug plan when you first quality. You can enroll up to three months in advance and for three months after that if those dates happen to coincide with annual enrollment or not.
  • Annual Election Period: The AEP is the time each year when everybody gets a chance to compare Medicare Advantage plans and Part D, and they also get to signup for a replacement plan if they want to. Right now, this period is from October 15 to December 7, but it might change in other years.
  • Disenrollment Period: From January 1 to February 15, Medicare beneficiaries get a period to drop their Medicare Advantage or drug plans and return to original Medicare.
  • Special Election Periods: If you lose your coverage, move out of the plan’s service area, or have some other special circumstances, you may get an SEP to enroll in replacement a plan as well.

Understanding Florida Blue Medicare Advantage Plans

Before you choose a Florida Blue Medicare plan or any Medicare Advantage plan, it will help to understand a little bit about how Medicare works with these plans. You might already realize that Medicare Part A and B are usually called Original Medicare. Together, these offer you extensive benefits to help pay for hospital and medical services.

Of course, Part A and B don’t cover all health-related services, most prescriptions, or almost anything at 100 percent. Florida Blue Medicare Advantage plans offer you an alternative to using Part A and B in this way:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida contracts with Medicare to provide all-in-one coverage that has to meet or exceed the benefits from Original Medicare.
  • Typically, Florida Blue MA plans also bundle in prescription drug plans.
  • Certain Florida Blue Medicare Advantage plans may come with some value-added perks that may help you pay for such health-related services as dental and vision care.

Medicare Part D

Note that you can buy a prescription drug plan on its own if your Florida Blue Medicare plan doesn’t include Part D. You do need drug coverage because Original Medicare doesn’t help you pay for the typical type of medications that you pick up at the corner drug store. Again, you can expect most Florida Blue Medicare Advantage plans to already include Part D.

These are some things that you should keep in mind when you compare drug coverage with any Florida Blue Medicare plans:

  • Check the plan’s formulary to make sure that it includes your prescriptions, and make a note of how they are covered.
  • Some Florida Blue Medicare plans may encourage you to use cheaper generics and justify the use of brand-name medications.
  • If you don’t get Part D or enroll in an MA plan that includes it, you might need to pay a penalty later when you do sign up. This penalty would be waived if you have other creditable drug coverage, such as you may get from your employer.

Florida Medicare Advantage Plans: Extras

There are a few more things you should learn about Florida Blue Medicare Advantage plans. Many of these things won’t just apply to Florida Blue but to any Medicare Advantage plan that you enroll in.

These are some things to learn about Florida Blue Medicare plans:

  • Even if you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan with zero premium, you probably still need to pay the Part B premium. The standard monthly Medicare Part B premium for 2022 is $170.10. The annual Part B deducible for 2022 is $233.
  • The government assigns star ratings for each company’s Medicare Advantage plans. Ratings range from one to five stars. They are based on many factors about how well the company has served customers in the previous year, and they can change each year.
  • Most people qualify for a Florida Blue Medicare plan because they have Original Medicare, also referred to as Medicare Part A and B.

Florida Blue Medicare Advantage Plans: Name Changes

If you already have a Florida Blue Medicare Advantage plan, you should know that they might have changed names.

This list below shows you some plan name changes for BlueMedicare plans to compare:

  • BlueMedicare Classic: This used to be Called BlueMedicare Lifetime
  • BlueMedicare Classic Plus: This used to be BlueMedicare MyTime
  • BlueMedicare Premier: This was BlueMedicare MyTime Plus
  • BlueMedicare Regional PPO: This was BlueMedicare Choice

Of course, these plans may have more changes than just the names. Again, you are probably prudent to do a comparison of plan benefits and formularies during your AEP this year.
